Fortunately, there are ways to restore your car’s lustre that doesn’t involve bleeding and bandages.

It is important to note that a car’s shiny outer coat is not just about aesthetics. A good paint job also protects the metal underneath and prevents rust and expensive repairs. What can you do when your old car loses its lustre and becomes susceptible to the elements? There are several options.

Because resprays can be expensive, most car owners who know their way around the garage will begin with paint restoration. But if the paint is too faded and thin it will be impossible to restore the original lustre. If this is the case, you must invest in a new paint job.

The average auto body shop does professional resprays for around one thousand pounds. A custom paint job may even run you up to two thousand pounds if you request a Clear Coat finish or a fancy metallic colour. The alternative to a professional shop is to go to one of the auto painting chains. Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that these shops are unprofessional. But at only about half the cost, they simply cannot offer the same options as a custom shop.

The third and final option that I recommend to anyone who wants to save a few hundred pounds while they learn a valuable new skill is to do the work on your own. That’s right! Resprays are not oil paintings. They don’t take an artistic touch. All they require are the right tools, proper instruction, and a little practice.

Well, motivation is an easy one. As we said, a proper paint job costs between one and two thousand pounds. But if you purchase your own tools and paint, you will be able to do the job for only around three hundred pounds. Not to mention the fact that you will have a set of new tools and a marketable skill. With an easy-to-follow programme, you can be taught the tricks of this highly sought after trade.

No matter how well you take care of your car, eventually the paint will fade. Fortunately, it takes a long time before a factory paintjob actually begins to peel. It might take a decade or more if the car is properly maintained. However, there is really only one way to restore a new car and give it that showroom shine, and that is to get a custom paintjob. A good custom paint job can take five, even ten years off your car’s appearance. It is the automotive equivalent of a full facelift.

Where should you go to get it done? There are several options:

Tragically, the most popular choice for many unsuspecting car owners is an auto painting chain store. I say tragically because these stores often cut corners in order to offer more attractive deals. Of course, you only get what you pay for. So, don’t be surprised if a paintjob from one of these outfits only lasts a year or two.

Then there are the auto body shops that do on site spraying. Though they may charge twice as much, their work is often twice as good. A professionally applied custom paintjob can and should last just as long as the original factory paintjob.

A third option that I would like to discuss with you today is to actually paint your own automobile. I know what you’re thinking. There’s a reason why it cost one thousand pounds for on site spraying. Those guys are good. Well, yes, they are. But they aren’t artists. On site spraying is a skill, just like replacing a carburettor or changing the oil. It can be learned. And you don’t have to spend a decade in an auto body shop like I did to pick it up. All you need is a good teacher.
